How to Get Amazon-Ready Product Photos When You Can't Afford a Photographer

Quick answer

Small CPG and beverage brands can produce an Amazon-main-image-style product hero and a set of social-ready images without hiring a photographer by combining free background-removal on one clean product photo with AI-generated scene backgrounds — the same local pipeline Robby Ds Lil Greens built and uses for its own Sweet Mango Splash product photography, at roughly $0 marginal cost per image.

Professional product photography for a small CPG brand usually runs $500 to $3,000+ and takes weeks of lead time. Here's the pipeline we built to skip that for our own product, the free way to do a version of it yourself, and the done-for-you option if you'd rather not.

Why product photography is a real bottleneck for small brands

A studio product shoot — the kind that produces an Amazon-compliant white-background hero plus a handful of lifestyle images — commonly costs $500 to $3,000 depending on market and scope, and often requires shipping physical product to a studio and waiting one to three weeks for delivery. For a founder still proving out a product line, that's real money and real time spent before a single unit has sold.

The alternative most early founders reach for — a smartphone photo on a kitchen counter — usually doesn't meet Amazon's main-image requirements (pure white background, product filling the frame, no props or text) and rarely looks competitive next to established brands on a shelf page or a social feed.

What we built for our own product

We build our own product marketing images with an in-house pipeline: a real photo of the actual bottle gets its background removed (an open-source tool called rembg), then that real product cutout gets placed onto either a plain white studio background (for an Amazon-style hero) or a generated scene background (for lifestyle images), with a matching drop shadow so it reads as one real photograph. The scene backgrounds themselves are generated locally with open-weight image models (Stable Diffusion / FLUX) running on our own hardware — so there's no per-image API fee, and no photographer's day rate.

The proof is live on our own site right now, not a mockup: our Amazon-style 12-pack hero and lifestyle image were both made this way, and you can see them at full resolution here: 12-pack hero and 12-pack lifestyle shot. Both started from one real phone photo of the actual bottle.

The free, build-it-yourself version

You can do a simpler version of this for $0 without any of our tooling. Take one clean photo of your product — upright, plain background, even lighting, no hand in frame (a white kitchen counter near a window works). Run it through a free background remover (remove.bg's free tier, or the open-source rembg library if you're comfortable with Python) to get a transparent cutout. From there, a free tool like Canva or GIMP can drop that cutout onto a plain white background for an Amazon-style hero, or onto a stock or AI-generated scene for a social post. It won't be as fast or as varied as a dedicated pipeline, but it costs nothing and gets you a usable hero image in an afternoon.

The done-for-you version

If you'd rather send us one product photo and get back a finished set, we now offer this as a service: one Amazon-main-image-style hero plus a 5-image social kit (lifestyle composite, feature-callout card, quote card, seasonal/promo card, and one more lifestyle or detail shot), delivered as a zip within 3 business days. It's the same pipeline described above, run on your product instead of ours — AI Product Photography Pack, $79.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real AI-generated product photography, or a fake render of my product?

Neither, exactly — it's a hybrid. The product itself is a real photo of your actual item, background-removed and composited in; only the backdrop scene (a studio white, a table, a seasonal setting) is AI-generated. Your product isn't invented or hallucinated by a model — it's the real thing, placed onto a new background.

What product photo do I need to send?

One clean photo: upright, full product in frame, straight-on, plain or uncluttered background, even lighting, no hand holding it. A phone photo on a white counter near a window is enough — it doesn't need to be professionally shot, but a cluttered or dim source photo will cut out roughly and show in the final images.

Does this work for products that aren't bottles?

Yes — the pipeline works on any product that can be photographed as a standalone object: bottles, bags, boxes, jars, pouches. The multi-unit grid layout (like our 12-pack hero) is easiest to demonstrate on bottled products, but a single-product hero and social kit works the same way for any packaged CPG item.

How is this different from just hiring a photographer?

A photographer gives you full creative control and can shoot props, models, and settings a generated background can't fully replicate yet. What this replaces is the $500-3,000+ studio-shoot price point and multi-week turnaround for a brand that mainly needs a clean, competitive Amazon hero and a handful of social images now — not a full brand photography campaign.
